Source words

1985

Background

Coined in the Toronto-based zine *J.D.s*, which LaBruce and Jones founded. The movement predates widespread LGBTQ acceptance in punk; the word self-consciously claimed *queer* before the broader academic reclamation of the 1990s.

Late 20th century

Marketing, media, and the early internet. Infomercial, emoticon, workaholic — the coinages name phenomena of mass media and white-collar life. Several predate the decades they're associated with.

Two words, one coinage.
