Vol. 08 · Shakespeare ·Othello, Act III.iii ·Iago

"Beware the green-eyed monster."

Not quite the line.

How it's usually quoted
"Beware the green-eyed monster."
What Shakespeare actually wrote
"O, beware, my lord, of jealousy; / It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock / The meat it feeds on." Iago — Othello, Act III.iii

Why it matters

Iago is warning Othello about jealousy while deliberately planting it — the warning is the weapon. Quoting it as advice ignores that Shakespeare made it a trap.
