Vol. 08 · Shakespeare ·Henry V, Act III.i ·King Henry V
"Cry God for Harry, England, and Saint George!"
Not quite the line.
How it's usually quoted
"Cry God for Harry, England, and Saint George!"
What Shakespeare actually wrote
"I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips, / Straining upon the start. The game's afoot: / Follow your spirit, and upon this charge / Cry "God for Harry, England, and Saint George!"" King Henry V — Henry V, Act III.i
Why it matters
Correctly quoted; widely taken as the final line of the breach speech. It is in fact the battle-cry the soldiers are told to shout — a direction, not a declaration by the king.
