Is it "allowed" or "aloud"?
Allowed means permitted. Aloud means out loud, spoken audibly.

Permission takes allowed: "you are allowed to leave." Volume takes aloud: "read it aloud." They sound identical but do different jobs — the spelling is the only thing keeping them apart on the page.
