Background

First recorded in US radio-and-television trade press. Originally described the early practice of sending identical audio on AM radio and the new FM band at once; later stretched to any multi-channel simultaneous transmission.

Mid-century: TV and science

Two engines dominated: television (sitcom, televangelist) and post-war big science (pulsar, transistor). Many mid-century coinages came from scientific style sheets and industry journals.
