"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."
They never said that.
What people say
"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."
What was actually said
The only thing we have to fear is fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror… Franklin D. Roosevelt — Franklin D. Roosevelt — First Inaugural, 1933
Why it stuck
The famous line ends cleanly, but FDR kept going with three qualifiers. Dropping them converts a specific diagnosis of panic into a vague maxim.
