"Not all those who wander are lost."
They never said that.
What people say
"Not all those who wander are lost."
What was actually said
"All that is gold does not glitter, / Not all those who wander are lost." Bilbo Baggins (of Aragorn) — The Fellowship of the Ring (1954) by J. R. R. Tolkien
Why it stuck
Tolkien's couplet begins "All that is gold does not glitter." Quoting the second line alone loses the parallel.
