"Money is the root of all evil."

They never said that.

What people say
"Money is the root of all evil."
What was actually said
"For the love of money is the root of all evil." Paul the Apostle (epistle) — 1 Timothy 6:10 (KJV, 1611)

Why it stuck

The popular form drops "the love of," shifting the indictment from a human disposition to the inanimate object. Theologians have noted the change reverses the moral point.
