Why it stuck
"Within us" and "inside us" are indistinguishable in most contexts — but the standard English translation (Muir/Stern) uses "within." The "inside" version is a back-translation drift from third-party blog quoting.
The letter is where Kafka explains what makes literature worth writing; the line is the clearest aesthetic statement he ever made.
