Memoir vs. Autobiography
A themed slice of a life versus a comprehensive life story.
The comparisoni
“Her memoir focuses only on her years as an astronaut — a themed slice. An autobiography would cover her whole life.”
The ruleii
¶
MEMOIR = slice. AUTOBIOGRAPHY = full.
AUTOBIOGRAPHY is the complete life story — chronological, comprehensive. MEMOIR takes a theme or period of a life and explores it in depth — one role, one relationship, one crisis. Memoirs are usually more literary.
Memory aidiii
Remember it like this
